WMATA | Design-Build for Andrews Federal Center Bus Operations & Maintenance Facility
The Andrews Federal Center Bus Operations and Maintenance Facility project included the design and construction of a new bus operations and maintenance facility on 35 acres of land in Prince George’s County, Maryland.
This new 335,000-square-foot complex included a 175-bus capacity maintenance and operations facility, fuel and wash buildings, a Heavy Repair and Overhaul (HRO) facility, a warehouse, bus engineering, non-revenue vehicle maintenance facility and a pedestrian bridge. Operating eight hours a day, five days a week, the HRO Facility accommodates the entire WMATA fleet of 1,600 buses.
SYSTRA was the lead designer for architectural, electrical, communications and industrial engineering. The project also included all sitework including utilities and parking. SYSTRA was also responsible for the full electrical design. A Simple Keynesian Model (SKM) was built to validate the design. Load flow and short circuit cases were evaluated.
Using the design-build project delivery method, the project has received a LEED Silver certification.
This project was awarded Engineer News-Record’s Mid-Atlantic 2019 Best Projects Award of Merit Airport/Transit.
